Roland DG Establishes Roland Workshop at Raffles Design Institute Shanghai, China
Joint initiative heralds new era of high value-added printing at China’s educational design institutions
Shanghai, September 24, 2014 – Roland DG Corporation, the world’s leading manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and 3D devices, announced today that Roland DG (China) Corporation has entered into an agreement with Raffles Design Institute Shanghai to establish a Roland Workshop on their Shanghai campus.
Raffles Design Institute Shanghai is an international design school established as a collaborative effort between Donghua University of Shanghai and Raffles Design Institute, based in Singapore. Since opening its doors in 1994, the school has won high praise for its innovative creative design curriculum, which has produced a wealth of talent operating in many design fields, from fashion and interior to graphics and multimedia.
Roland Workshop is committed to nurturing creativity, originality and entrepreneurship among design students. Equipped with our VS-640 inkjet printer/cutter and LEF-12 UV-LED printer, the Workshop empowers them to produce customized creative works of inspired design. Operations at the facility are supervised by a Roland DG (China) Corporation dealer. Students are able to work alongside a trained operator to receive advice and assistance in personally fashioning their creations and prototypes, or simply provide data and request the operator to produce their designs. They are provided with hands-on opportunities to turn images and designs into finished creative works using the latest graphics technology. What’s more, they learn practical business skills from the dealership staff, giving them an extra level of critical knowhow, essential to their future as independent professional designers.
"Our VS-640 inkjet printer/cutter enables the user to express 512 pearlescent and metallic colors and create richer, more dramatic lighting and shadow effects, easily, by applying metallic patterns and textures," said Cheng Qi, marketing manager at Roland DG (China) Corporation. "It delivers an exciting pallet of effects that are difficult to achieve with conventional CMYK color configurations. What’s more, our LEF-12 UV-LED printer is able to print directly onto a wide range of substrates, including plastics, wood and leather, as well as papers and film. It allows you to create rich embossing effects, too, using multiple layers of gloss ink. We hope these products empower the students to unleash untapped reserves of creative expression, and enable them to achieve stunning success beyond what they otherwise may have conceived."
Sara Corvino, director of the Visual Communication Program at Donghua University’s Raffles Design Institute, spoke highly of the collaboration: "By deepening the relationship between our school and Roland DG, we believe we’ll be able to provide a higher quality of creative educational programs. With the design knowledge gained at our school combined with the hands-on experience of the Workshop, students will have the skills and tools they need to graduate and succeed in the design field."
"By working with Raffles Design Institute Shanghai and our dealers to support the students, we hope to provide the design industry with a rich pool of high-quality talent," said Roland DG (China) Corporation President Michael Man. "We’ll also work with end-users of our inkjet printers in the industry to set up internships, and provide students with our full support in becoming entrepreneurs and establishing new businesses."
